Avinger, TX-Roger Dale Penn was born on July 4, 1957 in Wabash, Indiana to Jerry and Oma Hugg Penn.  He passed from this life on October 1, 2019 at his home in Avinger, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Roger is survived by one son, Damien J Penn and wife, Danielle of Spring, Texas.  He has one granddaughter, Chloe Penn of South Carolina, and three grandsons, Jordan, Ashton, and Nathan.  Roger adored his son and daughter-in-law and never missed any opportunity to tell how proud he was of his grandchildren.  They were his pride and joy.

He is also survived by his beloved mother, Oma Oswalt of Mountain Home, Arkansas, one brother, Jeremy Penn and wife Dena, of Jonesboro; and two sisters, Beverly Penn of Jonesboro, and Janie Davidson and husband, Kyle of Mountain Home; and many adored nieces and nephews.

He spent the last years of his life with his companion and dear friend, Deani Harris at their home in Avinger,Texas.

Roger began his career at Jerry's Lumber Shed in Strawberry helping in the family business.  He then moved to Texas and spent most of his working years working with a telecommunication contractor, burying cable.

As his life slowed down, he found that he had a natural talent and gift for wood carving.  He spent many hours in his shop making gifts that his family and friends now treasure. He was generous with what was entrusted to him and was always ready to share with anyone who admired his work.

Roger lived his life on his own terms.  He was a true free spirit.  He never met a stranger and he never left someone without a smile.  He spent his lifetime riding motorcycles and was happiest with the wind in his hair.

Roger's life will be celebrated at the Strawberry Church of Christ on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 3 p.m.  Visitation will be held before the service at 1 p.m. Tom Cumblidge will be sharing his thoughts and heart with those attending.  Interment will follow in Penn Cemetery in Strawberry under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Randall Caldwell, Steve Perry, Greg Penn, Bryan Brady, Scott Whitmire, and Dickie Penn.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Trusty, Anthony Harris, Craig Whitmire, Boyce Penn, Todd Brady, Tim Trusty, and Mike Doyle.
